Product data and specifications

We distinguish between figures we measured and figures we were given, and you should treat them differently:

• Measurements we took ourselves — flat garment dimensions, wash-test results. Accurate to the tolerance stated, on the sample we measured. Production runs vary.
• Manufacturer specifications — fill power, membrane ratings, fabric composition, temperature ratings. We reproduce these as supplied by the manufacturer. We have not independently verified them, and we do not have the laboratory to do so. A “rated to −5 °C” claim is the manufacturer’s claim, made under the manufacturer’s test conditions, which are unlikely to resemble your commute.

Colour reproduction depends on your screen. We photograph in neutral light and do not retouch colour, but we cannot promise the shade you see is the shade that arrives.

Sizing and fit

Size labels are not standardised across brands, or even reliably within one brand. We publish flat measurements precisely because “Large” means nothing on its own. Where our returns data shows that an item runs small or large, we say so on the product page.

Even so, fit is personal and we get it wrong sometimes. That is what the 7-day return window is for; it is not an admission that the size chart was fraudulent.

Buying guides and comparisons

Our guides compare products within our own catalogue. A guide titled “the best winter jacket” means the best of the ones we sell, and you should read it that way. We have not tested every jacket on the market and we do not claim to.

Recommendations reflect our judgement at the time of writing, for a typical use case we describe on the page. They are not a guarantee of performance in your conditions. Our Editorial Policy sets out who writes these guides and how advertising is kept away from them.

Health, safety and skin

Nothing on this site is medical advice. We are a clothing retailer. We are not dermatologists, allergists, or occupational safety assessors.

• If you have a fabric allergy or a skin condition, check the composition on the product page and consult a doctor, not a buying guide.
• None of the clothing we sell is personal protective equipment. Do not rely on a jacket sold here for protection in an industrial, motorcycling or mountaineering context.
• Care instructions come from the manufacturer. Following them does not guarantee a garment survives; ignoring them will usually guarantee it does not.
